Recreational Soccer Program
The SIU recreational soccer program is for children ages 4-19. We provide the opportunity for all children of any skill level to learn and play soccer. We focus on FUN! Players learn about good sportsmanship, teamwork, and get great exercise. All team members play at least half of every game. There are no cuts or tryouts. Each child receives a uniform. Players provide shin guards, a ball, and a water bottle. It is run totally by parent volunteers.
SIU registers approximately 600 – 700 children each season and we rely completely on parent coaches. We will set as many teams as possible based on the number of parent volunteer coaches and field availability. If you would like to be a coach or an assistant coach please contact the VP of Rec, Raymond Zoeller, via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. It’s a great no-pressure opportunity to have fun with kids in your community.
The 4U, 5U and 6U age groups combine practice and a game in one session. Practice starts at 5:30, with games starting at 6:00; or practice to start at 7:00, and games starting at 7:30 (schedules to be provided). 4U and 5U play on Monday nights and 6U is on Thursday nights. Coaches schedule practices for teams in the 7U and higher age groups. As a guideline, we suggest one practice a week for 7U – 8U and 1-2 practice per week for 9U and older (at the coaches discretion). Most games for 7U – 10U are played on Saturdays. Field locations will be announced prior to the season. Games for 12U and higher age groups are on local fields and at ‘away’ locations in surrounding counties in Indiana and Kentucky. Each team is scheduled to play eight games during each season. The seasons run from early March to Memorial Day in the Spring and late August to Halloween in the fall.
The SIU soccer year is from fall to spring just like school. Players on fall rosters generally stay with the same coach for the spring season provided that they register on time. All vacancies in the spring will be filled by newcomers at random by the Registrar. The Registrar randomly assigns players to 4U and 5U teams. The children of coaches and assistant coaches will be placed with their parents. All other parents will be contacted by their assigned coach(es) prior to the start of games.
